BMW DDC, cutting-edge technology

Dynamic Damping Control, DDC, is the new technological gem of BMW. Electronics is increasingly the path forward for motorcycles.

dynamic damping control

A new step in technology comes courtesy of BMW, Dynamic Damping Control, also known as DDC. It is a system that adjusts the suspension in real time, making our motorcycle behave in a more stable manner.

As an example, think of normal braking or even emergency braking. When this happens, the front suspension dips, increasing the weight on the front wheel, which can cause it to lock up. To prevent this, DDC works together with ABS and stiffens the front suspension (Telelever), preventing the front tyre from becoming excessively overloaded.

Another example would be acceleration. The ECU of our motorcycle, together with the DTC (traction control), is also connected to DDC. In this case, the rear shock absorber (Paralever) is adjusted so that the greatest available power is transmitted and wheelspin of the rear wheel is avoided.

All of this is achieved thanks to solenoid valves that receive signals from a control unit, the DDC’s own, in order to adjust compression and rebound. Depending on what is needed, the current supplied is increased or decreased. Sensors (gyroscopes) that report the motorcycle’s lean angle also play a major role here, in case of a bend, since the system also works in that situation.

The system will be optional on almost all models in the BMW range, and will come as standard on all GT 2012 models.
