Valentino Rossi with new helmet
It seems that AGV has decided to work very hard on a new aerodynamic design for its helmet ahead of the 2012 season.
A few weeks ago we witnessed the pre-season testing of MotoGP, and in them we were able to discover not only the prototypes of the motorcycles that will be seen next year. This is also the moment for brands that belong to the world of technology, motorcycles and riders to put their newest and most recent technologies to the test.
This is the case of AGV, which is relentless in its drive to improve and produce ever safer and better helmets. That is why we were able to see Valentino going out for a few laps with a new helmet.
This new protective element must come with a very thorough aerodynamic study; it appears to include a shape that optimizes the fit and flow of air over the helmet. And as for why this is necessary, it is for far more than people realize.
It is true that helmets are there to protect, but a poorly conceived and poorly studied helmet would first cause excessive helmet oscillation, which would produce the intense head movement of the riders, leading to premature fatigue in the riders’ necks and also visual fatigue, which could cause the riders to lose perception.
Another effect these helmets seek is for the boundary layer of air to adhere well to the contour of the motorcycle, rider and pillion, since the less the air is disturbed, the less drag it produces and the faster the riders can cut through it; that is, no aerodynamic braking occurs (induced drag). Air must be made easy to pass through the motorcycle.
Many things must be taken into account in the design of this. In Valentino’s case, I am sure the helmet has been designed directly in conjunction with Ducati’s aerodynamics rather than being a universal helmet (designed for any motorcycle). It looks very well studied, with the line of the dome and the transition toward the hump with the small wing.
As for materials, we can clearly see that it is made of carbon fiber, although it cannot be guaranteed that it does not include some layer of aramid fiber (Kevlar), which gives greater impact resistance. This last point is very common in helmets from this and other brands.
By the way, we take this opportunity to congratulate the 46, since today is his birthday, so Happy birthday il Dottore.

Saludos
