The MotoGP World Championship moved next to the Austrian Circuit to contest the pole position battle at this second round on the Austrian track, so anticipation was at its peak among riders and teams of the premier class.
First out on track were the riders who had not made the top 10 in the combined practice sessions, so they now had to go through Q1 and fight for one of the two positions granting access to Q2. The best were Jorge Martín and Miguel Oliveira. The top 13-20 was completed by Rins in 13th, Alex Marquez 14th, Bastianini 15th, Lecuona 16th, Marini 17th, Rossi 18th, Petrucci 19th and Crutchlow 20th.
And the moment of truth arrived, Q2, where we saw Jorge Martín set the reference at the start. The Ducati rider came out of Q1 strong, but with 9 minutes remaining Fabio Quartararo flew and broke every record with a 1:22.677.
Nobody could improve on the French rider’s time, until Jorge Martín, the winner of the last race at this track, flew on his final flying lap and set a 1:22.643, the new track record. Without a doubt, the 89 left us speechless. Behind him was Quartararo, 0.034s back. Then Bagnaia, Zarco, Marc, Miller, Mir, Aleix, Oliveira, Binder, Pol and Nakagami.
