Cortese, Márquez and Spies the fastest at the WU in Indy
The warm-up sessions have left Cortese, Márquez and Spies as the fastest riders. Quite slow times that speak to the fear of this very slippery asphalt.
Once the pre-race Warm UP sessions are over, the riders must have everything ready for the race; the tools they have are what will make them perform better or worse at the Indianapolis GP.
In all three categories we have seen a very calm warm-up session, a contrast to the qualifying session where crashes were the highlight, and the riders have come out somewhat more conservative in this session.
In the smallest category, Moto3, Sandro Cortese has been the fastest, as he already was in FP2, FP3 and the qualifying session. The German rider wants to fight for the title and, for now, could not be doing any better. Second, Jonas Folger, who is living a dream weekend, has gone from closing the grid to leading it. The change of bike, from the Ioda to the KalexKTM, and being in a team like Team Aspar, opens every possible door for good results, and as it should be, he is enjoying the moment.
Third, Khairuddin, who slipped in just ahead of Maverick, all of them, and down to sixth (Luis Salom), have run a 1:49, but the times have been almost a second slower than those achieved yesterday. It is true that the track makes the riders have to go out a little more calmly.
Remaining Spaniards: Alex Márquez 9th, Efren Vázquez 10th, Alex Rins 11th, Isaac Viñales 12th, Alberto Moncayo 17th and Adrián Martín 18th. Héctor Faubel did not go out, and after yesterday’s crash he will not be able to race.
In the intermediate category, Moto2, Marc Márquez set the fastest time, 1:43.281, just ahead of a great surprise, Nico Terol, and as we already said yesterday, Terol and Indianapolis are almost a love story.
Pol Espargaró finished third, although he suffered a crash, which was quite silly and had no major consequences. The crash was preceded by an off-track excursion, which meant the tyres got wet on the grass surrounding the circuit, and upon returning to the track he suffered a small crash.
So, a triplet of Spaniards in this category. Behind them, Tito Rabat, who also seems to have stepped forward, perhaps due to the conservatism of the other riders or perhaps not; it is not easy to know what they are thinking at every pit box.
Tenth, Julián Simón, riding a little more than a second slower than in yesterday’s qualifying session. Close behind him, Jordi Torres, who keeps adapting and doing so very well, eleventh, a great position for our CEV leader.
Remaining Spaniards: Ricky Cardús 21st, Axel Pons 23rd and Elena Rosell 33rd.
Finishing with MotoGP, Ben Spies has been the fastest. At home, he is eager to do well and also to start an end-of-season run that earns him a place at the top of world motorcycle racing.
Second was Pedrosa, who broke the record yesterday and today has a very good chance to win the race; we will see if he manages to do it and tighten the championship a little more. Behind him is Jorge, who always stays consistent whatever the circumstances, and in the race he will bring out his hammer today: working harder than anyone.
Casey Stoner is not giving up and, despite having to get around on crutches, he has been declared fit to race and seems set to do so; although he is very limited in his movement when he is off the bike, once on it he has placed himself in sixth position.
The remaining Spaniards: Álvaro Bautista 8th, Aleix Espargaró 10th, Iván Silva 17th, Toni Elias 18th.
Nicky Hayden, due to yesterday’s crash and having been unconscious for a time, is not fit to compete today.
