Viñales, Pedrosa and Espargaró on top in the MotoGP Sachsenring FP2s

The MotoGP FP2s have once again left us with many doubts ahead of the weekend, as the weather is going to play an important role.

The second practice sessions of the MotoGP World Championship, this weekend in Germany, have had it all. Now the teams won’t be able to say that certain circumstances caught them off guard, as we have gone through rain, sun, and a track that at many moments was halfway between wet and dry.

The fastest in these preparatory sessions have been Maverick Viñales, Dani Pedrosa and Pol Espargaró, placed in the order in which the sessions took place, although on Sunday everything will be different (MotoGP timetable).

In Moto3, the fastest rider was Mack, just ahead of Kornfeil, who had been the fastest in the first session. Besides taking the top spot in the final moments of practice, jumping from third to first, his time was 1:28.661, an improvement on his first-session time. Third was Danny Kent, Cortese’s teammate, who lately has been showing an extra edge. Shortly before the session ended, heavy rain started, which would precede the MotoGP session.

Behind them we find Faubel in fourth. We don’t know whether it was the famous talk Aspar had with his riders or because something new has arrived at the team, but the point is that we are glad they are finally starting to show up higher. Ninth was his teammate Moncayo, the next of ours, just ahead of Luis Salom, who, given the characteristics of his bike, won’t have an easy weekend in dry conditions.

Efrentxu was twelfth and Adrián Martín thirteenth. Both teammates at JHK Laglisse have a hard afternoon ahead, studying telemetry and making changes to get a productive FP3.

The last two of our squad are Isaac Viñales 18th and Iván Moreno 29th.

In MotoGP, Dani was the fastest, 1:32.228, in a session where tyre choice played a key role. Rain and a short period when it stopped falling kept the riders of the premier class in constant chaos.

Second was Stefan Bradl, and Jorge Lorenzo third. It seems that in this combination of track and weather, the Honda are the ones that adapt best. Casey Stoner was fourth.

Fifth was Valentino Rossi on the first of the Ducatis. Seeing the track wet gives the Italian rider an extra boost of motivation, as he knows it is his only chance to get good results.

In the CRT class we have James Ellison, who with his ART from the Paul Bird team has made a very big leap forward, going from closing the grids to slotting in among the riders of the sub-category.

Héctor Barberá tenth, Álvaro Bautista eleventh, Aleix Espargaró thirteenth and second in the CRT class, and finally Iván Silva twentieth, with a couple of scares when the track was at its wettest.

To close the Moto2 report: if today had been decisive for the race, only sixteen riders would have started. Here the weather shuffle was indeed huge, and only Pol Espargaró managed to make the most of it at exactly the right moment, with a time of 1:28.258, one second and 395 thousandths faster than the second-best lap, set by Dominique Aegerter.

Third was Roberto Rolfo, just ahead of Ricky Cardús. Marc Márquez has been moving forward again after the big crash he suffered in FP1, and has qualified eighth.

A lot of work remains for tomorrow, and the worst part will be the unpredictability of the weather that is expected all weekend.
