The 2016 season came to a close in Valencia with the FIM awards and trophies gala for the MotoGP World Championship, Moto2 and Moto3, without a doubt a year that left us with incredible races and plenty of action in every round of the World Motorcycle Racing calendar.
This time the gala was hosted by Suzi Perry and Ernest Riveras, with the president of Dorna Sports, Carmelo Ezpeleta, and the president of the FIM, Vito Ippolito, handing out the many awards throughout the evening. The three world champions, Marc Márquez, Johann Zarco and Brad Binder, were the center of attention at the gala.
The award for the best rookie of the year went to Tito Rabat, along with the first British rider to win in MotoGP in 35 years, Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda), for his two victories in the premier class, who was recognized as the best rider in the Open category. Meanwhile, the Moto2 rookie was our Xavi Vierge, and the Moto3 rookie was our Joan Mir.
Meanwhile, the BMW M award for the best rider in qualifying sessions went once again to Marc Márquez in the MotoGP category, while the Tissot Pole of Poles award went to both Zarco and Binder in the Moto2 and Moto3 categories, so the three champions were the pole-sitters in their respective classes. The Movistar Yamaha MotoGP team collected the trophy that distinguishes the best MotoGP team, while the constructors’ titles went to Honda in MotoGP, Kalex in Moto2 and KTM in Moto3.
The Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup champion Ayumu Sasaki, runner-up Álex Viu and third-placed Raúl Fernández also took to the stage to receive the medals that recognize their promising performances in the 2016 competition.
