Márquez wins the first victory at the German GP
A thrilling race with the suspense of wondering whether Pol Espargaró could make up ground after his poor qualifying yesterday. He finally finished fourth in a race won by Márquez
With Márquez on pole and Espargaró in a far-off 17th place, but with a sunny day that contrasted with yesterday’s rain, we were all eager to see how the race would unfold, knowing Pol would give everything to recover positions and prevent Marc from opening up more of a gap in the overall standings.
During the warm-up we saw Polyccio’s determination to overcome those bad practice sessions and come back through the field, setting the best time of the morning, ahead of Thomas Luthi and Marc Márquez himself. With very similar times, everything was going to depend on the traffic the Granollers rider might find before reaching the front of the race.
The start was quite clean, and in the first corners we saw no trouble. We only saw Redding go down and Toni Elías almost running wide to avoid the Briton. It was a treat to also enjoy Julián Simón in those early positions thanks to his 2nd place on the grid, but the rider from Villacañas could not keep up the pace of the leaders and kept losing positions.
Midway through the race, Márquez, Iannone, Kallio and De Angelis began opening a gap, until Andrea got in the way and crashed, almost at the same time as Pol Espargaró saved an almost certain fall after a scare that nearly threw him off. This caused him to lose a bit of pace and be left fighting with Smith and Corsi.
In the final stretch of the race, Márquez was able to open a small gap, leaving the fight for the podium to Kallio and De Angelis. In fourth place came Pol, with Luthi almost on his tail, and he was one lap short of catching up with him. As for the Spanish riders, after Marc and Pol, the first to cross the line was Tito Rabat in 12th, Ricky Cardús 13th, Nico Terol 14th and Julián Simón 15th. Neither Elena Rosell, Axel Pons nor Toni Elías finished.
