Márquez takes pole in Assen Moto2

Marc Márquez takes pole on one of the most complicated circuits of the whole championship. Assen is where good riders prove themselves.

After a weekend in which Pol Espargaró was dominating, pole has finally gone to his big rival in the championship, Marc Márquez, with a time of 1:37.133. A spectacular lap from the Cervera rider has allowed him to take first position. What a fight awaits these two from here to the end of the season; the form and ambition of both could not be greater.

With just 8 minutes left, Marc was on top form, setting records in sectors one and two, but a row of three lapped riders forced him to brake a little later before reaching one of the chicanes, and in doing so he went down with the bike sliding sideways. At that moment his partial time improved by more than 400 thousandths; traffic seems to have helped him this time.

A few laps later he suffered a crash in which he came off the bike over the top. At first, somewhat dazed, he checked that nothing was broken, and he seemed a little bothered by the fall, but he picked up his bike and returned to the pits just as the checkered flag fell.

Behind him was Pol, and both Marc and he, together with Iannone, are the only ones able to ride at 1:37, although the Italian has a high 37 (1:37.956).

Assen, like Silverstone, are circuits where the rider’s skill through corners shows a great deal, as do the perfection of the lines and a well-set-up bike. That is why the gaps between riders are bigger than at other circuits.

The rest of our fleet:

Tito Rabat – 11th
Ricky Cardús – 15th
Axel Pons – 20th
Toni Elías – 21st
Julián Simón – 23rd
Nico Terol – 25th
Elena Rosell – 33rd

Marc Márquez (1st) (#93):

I’m happy despite the crash; the bike slid away from me at the front and I couldn’t do anything. But we have the pace for tomorrow’s race.

Pol Espargaró (2nd) (#40):

I’m very happy. We are consistent, we have a very good pace from lap to lap, and our bike has improved.

Andrea Iannone (3rd) (#29):

I’m happy with third place, but I think there is a step between Marc and Pol compared with the rest.
