Jorge Lorenzo: "It has been one of my sweetest victories"

The MotoGP World Champion, Jorge Lorenzo, delivered an incredible race today at the Mugello circuit, earning a hard-fought victory on the Italian track, Yamaha’s second consecutive win this season.

Lorenzo got off to a strong start from fifth place, jumping up to second and getting very close to pole sitter Stoner, although the Australian gradually pulled away while the Mallorcan maintained an intense battle with Andrea Dovizioso.

After shaking off Dovi a little, Lorenzo brought out all his firepower and kept closing the gap, lap by lap, making contact with Stoner and passing him in spectacular fashion.

Meanwhile, Ben Spies fought hard with Marco Simoncelli for fourth place, with the American proving the smarter of the two and passing Sic on the last lap to steal fourth position.

With this result, Lorenzo will arrive at Sachsenring 19 points ahead, so the standings tighten up a little.

Below you can see the statements from Jorge Lorenzo:

It has been one of my sweetest victories. The win in Jerez was not real because it was raining. Although it has been a very tough race due to the heat, especially with no water at the rider’s suit pit area.

I pushed and gave everything with all my heart. I tried to overtake Andrea on the downhill into the chicane, and then I did the same with Casey, because I thought it was the perfect corner for them.

I am now more motivated and confident for the future, after this great result. I think it has been one of the most demanding races of my career; it reminded me a little of the 125cc days.
