Herlings and Cairoli dominate the MX World Championship round in Mexico
The MX World Championship made its stop in Mexico yesterday, with two of its categories, MX1 and MX2, in which Herlings and Cairoli once again came out on top.
The MX1 and MX2 Motocross World Championship held its fourth round of the 2012 season in Mexico, after many problems with the track and qualifying sessions that were cancelled for most of the riders in the world championship. The moment of truth had arrived: the two motos in both categories.
So, with the motos about to start and the track problems more or less resolved, most of the World Championship riders took part, with Antonio Cairoli in MX1 and Jeffrey Herlings in MX2 the best in this round. Both dominate their categories with an iron fist and seem unstoppable, although there are riders who are very eager to keep winning, such as Philippaerts, Desalle, Searle and Van Horebeek.
The MX2 category began with Jeremy Van Horebeek leading on his KTM in the first moto, followed by his teammate Herlings and by Valentin Teillet on his Kawasaki, while Searle was 4th on the other Kawasaki. But Herlings would not take long to pass his teammate and take the lead on lap 3, and from that moment on he controlled the whole round and added another win to his record. He closed out the victory with more than 7 seconds’ advantage over Tommy Searle in 2nd, who quickly overtook Teillet, and then Van Horebeek also passed Valentin to move into 3rd.
Then, in the second moto, Van Horebeek shone again at the holeshot, but on this occasion the KTM rider could not hold his teammate Herlings off for even a second. Half a lap after the first corner, Herlings was already in first, achieving another incredible double. Meanwhile, Searle went down while in 3rd, losing several positions, but he came back on the attack and managed to climb back up to 2nd. For his part, Van Horebeek finished 3rd in this moto.
This Mexico GP thus concluded with Herlings 1st, Searle 2nd and Van Horebeek 3rd, completing the podium for this fourth round.
For our representative, José Antonio Butrón, things went fairly well. In the first moto he shone with a very interesting 9th place, fighting hard in the front group, but in the second moto things did not go as well: a mechanical problem left him out and he could only finish 22nd in this heat, so it was a mixed result for the 17. But on to Brazil. In the overall GP standings he closed 15th.
In the MX1 category there is only one clear name, Tony Cairoli, the 222 has no rival. He is unbeatable, although he did not win both motos, he took the overall victory in the Grand Prix, so more points for the Italian, who for now dominates MX.
The first moto was won by Clement Desalle on his Suzuki, who got off to a very strong start and dominated, followed by Pourcel and Cairoli. Cairoli, within about eight laps, was already in first position and opening a gap, with Desalle 2nd and Ken de Dycker 3rd. The worst of this moto were the falls by Philippaerts and Simpson in the wave section on lap 1, which would affect their whole round, and for Simpson it was worse as he was injured.
In the second moto, Philippaerts wanted to put right the mistake from the first, so he went all out, passed Cairoli and took control of the moto. Furthermore, the Italian Tony suffered a fall while in third, losing several positions, which would cost him the win in this heat, but he kept fighting back relentlessly, passing Pourcel and De Dycker to regain his position. So the Yamaha rider closed out a perfect moto, with his first victory of the season for them and finishing 3rd in the overall GP standings.
The combined result was Cairoli 1st, Desalle 2nd and Philippaerts 3rd, in what is becoming the usual podium. For our rider, Jonathan Barragán, things went very well. The truth is that the 7 showed great pace, closing the first moto in 7th place and the second moto in 9th, with 8th place in the overall GP standings and rising to 12th in the World Championship standings.
Now on to Brazil.
