Faubel and Terol will start from the front row at the Misano race
Faubel has beaten his teammate Terol to it and will start ahead of him in the race. But the pace of both makes it likely that they will break away and fight for victory at Misano
Despite dominating all three free practice sessions, BANKIA Aspar rider Nico Terol has not managed to take another pole. He was overtaken by Zarco and his teammate Faubel. In a qualifying session in which numerous riders were clearly seen looking for a slipstream, the pole went to Zarco, guided by Nico Terol.
Héctor Faubel will start second and Nico Terol third, which means both riders are aiming for victory. Everything is set for them to fight for the top step of the podium. They have good pace and are at a circuit they love.
His teammate Adrián Martín also has good pace, but he could not qualify higher up the standings due to a scare on the last lap of the official run, which deprived him of improving his times.
Héctor Faubel, 2nd (1:43.440):
I’m super happy. We knew we had to push very hard from the middle of the session to position ourselves at the front and rule out surprises, such as seeing you relegated to the second row.
At the end of the session I completed two very fast final laps, at pole pace, but in the last corners I came up behind Adrián in the last sector and could not sharpen the time any further. We have good pace, and only four riders managed to go under 1:43, which means a lot.
I suppose that if nothing happens a group of the four of us will form, and maybe someone else who can tag along. It will be a tough group, because nobody will want to give up an inch, but I’m convinced we can fight for the victory.
Nico Terol, 3rd (1:43.604):
It was a very tight session, in which I got very good pace, but I did not put together a perfect lap that would give me the best time. I managed three laps in the 1:43s and several in the low 1:44s. I’m happy with this pace; I think we’re ready for the race.
I was left wanting to claim pole, but Zarco came from behind and got a good time. This afternoon we’ll need to look at everyone’s race pace to work out how the race might go. I think we’ll be a group of four riders, and we’ll need to position ourselves well and wait to see how things unfold, so we can play our cards in the most intelligent way. The session was strange, with many riders sitting in the garage and nobody wanting to push.
For my part I was only thinking about working. They caught up with us at the end, but that’s how the category is. I’m happy with the front row and prepared for the race. Tomorrow I will try to get the most out of the situation.
Adrián Martín, 18th (1:45.193):
This weekend everything was going perfectly, but in the official session I could not confirm a good time. I went out a bit more nervous than usual and wanted to leave everything for the end; on the last lap I came up behind Héctor and we got in each other’s way.
We have to think positively. We have plenty of riders ahead of us, and it could be an entertaining race if we manage to make up places. I’m going to focus on passing as many riders as I can, to finish the race as high up as possible.
