Aprilia will not be in Moto2 next season

The brand Aprilia has made official the rumor that existed in the Moto2 World Championship about its participation, since the Italians have issued a statement saying that Aprilia will not take part in the new Moto2 category, so the teams that planned to race with its chassis have been left perplexed.

Apparently the refusal of the President of the Piaggio Group, Roberto Colarinno, to enter this new category has led to this situation, leaving all the teams and their projects in the lurch. We will see how the teams that depended on the brand get out of this situation.

The Piaggio Group announces that Aprilia will not take part in the Moto2 Championship and will not supply motorcycles for that championship to private teams.

From the perspective of the Piaggio Group, the Moto2 Championship does not present the technological and competitive characteristics necessary to consider Aprilia’s participation in this type of competition strategic.

The Piaggio Group therefore considers it unnecessary and detrimental to the image of a major Italian and European motorcycle manufacturer—which has won 43 world titles in speedway and off-road—to take part in a competition that should focus on the engine technology of a rival manufacturer.

For the moment it seems that the only team that could get out of this mess would be that of Jorge Martínez Aspar, but that is not clear either, since they must first test the bikes on December 9 and 10 in Valencia and only then will they make a decision.

We will hold a meeting these days and see what we can do. If we backed Aprilia it’s because we believed it was the best project, but before making any decision we have to test the bike.

We have two world champions in the team and we have to give them the best. If we don’t see a future after the tests, we are willing to look at more options such as Suter or some other manufacturer.
