Spies and Lorenzo gradually find their rhythm at MotoGP Japan
The Yamaha Factory Racing riders, Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies, have had mixed luck: while one fought at the limit with the Honda, the other was going through a rough patch physically.
The Yamaha Factory Racing MotoGP riders have not started as well as they would have liked, since on one hand Ben Spies had to retire from the second free practice session due to stomach problems, while Jorge Lorenzo was caught up in the official Honda.
The reigning MotoGP World Champion, Lorenzo was the only one to give the Honda some trouble, with a solid start from fifth position and good times, working to improve his lap times and gain more grip on track. Although these were two complex, demanding sessions with a lot of hard work, the Mallorcan should surely keep improving for FP3.
For his part, Ben Spies did not have a good day. In both the first and second sessions he was held back by his stomach problems, although in the morning he was able to stay on track, unlike in FP2, where he completed five laps and had to withdraw from the session and go to the medical centre.
Statements from Jorge Lorenzo:
We improved our lap time quite a bit from the morning to the afternoon session, but it is still not enough, the competition is very strong here.
It is going to be a very difficult weekend to fight for the podium and the victory. We are trying some things on the bike to improve stability under braking and in the corners.
We have found a little, but we still need to find a bit more! We are fifth, which could be worse at the moment.
