Shane Byrne scores a double in the BSB race at Brands Hatch
The 2014 British Superbike Championship got underway today at the Brands Hatch Circuit, in its Indy version, with Shane Byrne in top form, taking a double victory in the opening round of this season and moving to the top of the overall standings.
The race started very well for Byrne, who took control of the race and never lost that position at any point. There was intense fighting with Easton at the start, while Brookes and Ellison came through from behind to move into the leading positions. Josh in particular had his hands full with Easton, Walker, Kiyonari and company.
With 5 laps to go, things got a bit more exciting as we saw Brookes put his foot down, leave the group he was in and start chasing the leading duo, managing to get past Ellison with three laps remaining. Meanwhile, Byrne was pushing hard because he knew the Yamaha rider was coming up behind him, eager to make up ground after the crash in the first race.
In the end, Brookes could not mount a proper attack on Byrne, and Shane scores a double in this first round of the year. It is a great start for the veteran rider, while Brookes finished second in this race, just 0.138s behind. Ellison came in third, more than 1.7s back. The top 10 was completed by Kiyonari in 4th, Walker 5th, Easton 6th, Westmoreland 7th, Linfoot 8th, Bridewell 9th and Wilson 10th.
With these results added to those of the first race, we have Byrne leading with 50 points, followed by Ellison 18 points behind, Walker third 19 points back, Brookes fourth and Easton fifth, both 30 points off the leader.
Maximum BSB 2014 action.
