Ricky Cardús is ruled out of the GP Catalunya due to appendicitis

After confirmations and denials, yesterday brought the official statement from the QMMF Racing team, which reported that Moto2 rider Ricky Cardús would not be taking part in the 2011 Catalan Grand Prix due to appendicitis.

The alarms went off on the night of Friday into Saturday, but there was no confirmation of any kind, so everything was treated with caution. It is now known that the 23-year-old rider began feeling unwell with severe stomach pain, and he was taken to the Hospital General de Sant Cugat, where he was diagnosed with acute appendicitis.

Shortly after, he went into surgery at around 3 a.m. on Saturday. Luckily, everything went well, he is now in recovery and is even expected to be able to go home today.

On the one hand, it was bad luck that this happened at his home Grand Prix, but on the other hand, it wasn’t.

Had this happened anywhere else, at the next race at Silverstone or at a transoceanic event, it would have been harder to get proper medical care. But here at home, it helps that the hospital is just a phone call away. We thought taking Ricky to the hospital would be nothing more than a precautionary measure, and it turned out to be the right decision. The operation was a routine procedure and went without complications. Ricky is recovering quickly. He will leave the hospital on Sunday, and he is confident of returning to racing next week at Silverstone!
