Red Bull: New Year, an incredible show in Las Vegas

On December 31st, Las Vegas will be the stage for a spectacular event, as the city will witness a motorcycle jump of 100 feet high, about 30 meters, and also a back flip with an off-road pickup truck.

So the show is in the hands of Robbie Maddison and Rhys Millen, who, before the clock strikes midnight, will begin this very challenging feat and make history in the unique performances at the Red Bull New Year.

Last year, Maddison set a Guinness record by beating the 322-foot, roughly 98.5-meter mark. This year the distance won’t be greater, but it demands great concentration and a lot of training.

Maddison himself made these statements:

Last year I had some doubts about whether I could jump over a football field, but as I trained I gained more and more confidence in myself and realized I could do it; and I did. Twice! This year, the doubts are even greater. This jump has never been done before, but I trust in myself and I believe that, with training, the dream that now seems impossible will become real.

On the other hand, Millen will attempt to become the first person to land a back flip in an off-road pickup truck, reaching a height of about 15 meters and a distance of about 24 meters. The rider also wants to make up for last year, when he was injured during a training session and left out of the show.

Last year we tried to do what had previously been considered impossible. The laws of physics and the vehicle’s aerodynamics were pushed to the limit successfully, but the failure came from a tiny calculation error. My body may have been broken, but my mind was not. This year, people will witness the first back flip in history, from one ramp to another, in an off-road vehicle.
