Rider Niccolò Canepa underwent surgery last Wednesday at the San Martino Hospital in Genoa to remove hardware from old injuries. Specifically, the aim was to take out the screws and plates that were fitted to the Italian rider after his dramatic crash at the Nürburgring circuit in the 2012 season.

Canepa suffered a very nasty crash at that event that left him with multiple fractures in the tibia and fibula of his right leg. Now, more than a year later, he has returned to the operating theatre to remove all the hardware that was fitted on that occasion to aid his recovery.

The operation lasted two hours and was carried out by surgeon Federico Santolini, and was a success, with the Italian making a strong recovery after the procedure. In total, two plates and twenty screws were removed from his right leg, so a significant amount of hardware that had been fitted in that area.

Statements from Niccolò Canepa:

Two plates and twenty screws were removed from my right leg, which the German doctors fitted last year after the crash at the Nürburgring. It was a procedure that had already been planned, and this was the right moment. I think I will start training again next week, although I have not yet begun the rehabilitation programme.

Canepa joins a list of riders from Superbikes and other categories and disciplines who take advantage of the Christmas break to go under the knife to fix injuries and remove hardware from old injuries.

Regarding Canepa’s future plans, these are yet to be finalised and will be officially announced over the next two weeks.
