The MotoGP World Championship was the next to head out onto the Austin circuit, in Texas, to contest the battle for pole position for the third round of the 2016 season, so there was maximum expectation on track and among the teams to see tomorrow’s grid.
First out were the MotoGP riders to contest Q1, fighting to secure one of the two places that advance to Q2 and the battle for the top 12. In the end, Smith with a sensational final lap, and with Aleix Espargaró on fire, were the fastest riders in Q1 and therefore secured their place in Q2. Meanwhile, the top 13-20 was completed by Pol in 13th, Barbera 14th, Laverty 15th, Bradl 16th, Pirro 17th, Hernández 18th, Bauti 19th and Rabat 20th. Miller was declared unfit by the doctors.
And then came the moment of truth, Q2, in which Lorenzo was the initial dominator, while later we saw Márquez take control of the practice session, setting a time of 2:03.188, although the number 93 did not have it easy, as the second-placed Jorge Lorenzo was only 0.069s behind the first, so there was maximum equality.
For his part, the top 12 was completed by Rossi 3rd, Iannone 4th, Viñales 5th, Cal Crutchlow 6th, Dovi 7th, Pedrosa 8th, Aleix Espargaró 9th, Redding 10th, Smith 11th and Baz 12th.
Tomorrow we have a very exciting race ahead, but after what we have seen on Friday and Saturday, everything points to a clear favourite, Marc Márquez, the number 93 was the best on Friday and was also the best on Saturday, standing as the category’s pole sitter, but with Lorenzo also having pace and having stayed close to him, and with Rossi wanting to make some noise.
On to the race in Austin.
