The British Superbike Championship has been turned upside down once again. After seeing Alex Lowes take a double at the Assen Circuit, things have changed, as Race Direction announced it would review the Byrne-Lowes incident in the first three laps after the end of the event.
So after seeing Lowes take the second win of the day, Race Direction made an important decision regarding the incident between the two Championship favorites, and in the end they decided that the action of the Samsung Honda rider deserved a penalty.
The penalty for Lowes was exclusion from the result of the second race of the BSB at Assen. Therefore, he has not achieved a double, but rather a win in the first race and a zero in the second race, leaving the victory to James Ellison.
With this decision, Byrne is once again the championship leader, but with just a 1-point lead over Lowes. Two races remain on the British national calendar, and the excitement is guaranteed between these two riders. For now, that is how the situation stands, pending whether Lowes’ team decides to appeal this decision made by Race Direction.
The next BSB round will be in October at the Silverstone Circuit, where plenty of tension is expected. The title is at stake and we have two very strong riders fighting for it. We will see how this penalty affects Lowes, and how Byrne feels after the crash.
What do you think of the decision?
