Jakub Smrz will start from pole position in SBK at Silverstone
Jakub Smrz took pole in Superbikes; tomorrow he will start from the first position. If rain shows up, Checa will have a great opportunity.
Exciting Superpole in Superbikes, wet and dry patches, have been a real nightmare for all the riders. In the end, the only one to walk away with a good feeling was Smrz.
Let’s start from the beginning: in the first session, all the riders went out onto a very wet track with wet tyres. The race lead kept changing hands, as the water gradually cleared and the bikes could go faster.
In this session the fastest was our Carlos Checa. The Ducatis proved to be the best bikes in these wet track conditions, since the lower power combined with the more elastic engine lets the riders who ride them go with more smoothness.
The rider who has had the most problems so far this weekend is Max Biaggi. Having the most powerful bike is not always an advantage, and for him this weekend has really been a difficult one. It was a shame about the crash by Baz in this SP1, since the Kawasaki rider was doing really well and only narrowly missed qualifying for the second session, although we will never know whether he could have taken part in it.
In the final session we had Sykes, Melandri, Camier, Checa, Guintoli, Smrz, Giugliano and Haslam.
Bad luck for the riders: Sykes, Checa and Giugliano crashed in this session, precisely the ones who were pushing hardest to set their times.
In the end pole went to Smrz, second Camier and third Guintoli. Haslam, Giugliano, Melandri, Checa and Sykes were fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.
Let’s hope that tomorrow the track conditions allow us to enjoy an entertaining race from start to finish, and that the riders don’t have to go so close to disaster as they did today in qualifying.
