The big news of the week at the MotoGP World Championship Grand Prix at the Jerez Circuit has been the signing of Jorge Lorenzo by Ducati for the next two seasons of the premier class, thus closing a very important and successful chapter with Yamaha since his arrival in MotoGP in 2008.
Ducati is very excited about Lorenzo’s arrival, although now we will have to see what happens to Andrea, who will be left out of the Italian brand’s official team. Among the key people who have been sounding out the Mallorcan is Paolo Ciabatti, sporting director of Ducati Corse, who has spoken to the Italian media about the signing.
Ciabatti emphasizes that the evolution and current results of the Ducati were key in getting the 99 to make the decision of the big change and take on one more challenge in his racing career. Paolo also commented that it was not very difficult to convince Jorge; after several negotiations everything moved quickly and the agreement was closed by mutual consent of both parties involved.
Apparently Ducati’s goal for 2017 was to have one of the category’s star riders, which is why they have sounded out everyone, their best option being Lorenzo, with whom they hope to fight for the title next year. During the statements another interesting topic came up: Lorenzo’s teammate in the official team. For now, it seems no decision has been made, and the 99 doesn’t mind which of the two stays in the lineup, so we will be watching for Ducati’s final decision.
There is no doubt that it is quite a challenge for Lorenzo to move into Ducati, a complete change of bike, brand and team, so it will be a very interesting change of scenery for the Mallorcan.
