Yesterday rider Carmelo Morales was crowned the first European Superbike Champion at the Jerez Circuit, where two races were held and he secured the essential double win needed to claim the title of this novel and international championship.
Specifically, he needed 11 points to win the title, so to secure it mathematically, he had to finish in fifth place if his main rival climbed to the top of the podium. But Carmelo wanted to win this championship in style and led the races across the finish line at the end of the events.
This new title, the 20th for the team led by Jaime Fdez-Avilés, is especially valued by the Madrid-based structure, not only because it is the first in the new FIM CEV European Championship, but because it marked Yamaha’s return to a team with which the Japanese brand has achieved great success in Spain.
Statements from Carmelo Morales:
I am very happy. It has been a very good year in which we faced not only very tough rivals, but also a change of tyres and a new Yamaha, which motivated us a lot, and from the start we were very competitive, developing the bike very quickly. I have felt very strong throughout this season, the Yamaha has performed very well and the team has given everything. I want to dedicate this title to the family of Dani Rivas and to that of Bernat Martínez, and send a big hug to Kenny Noyes, whom I hope to see again soon.
Congratulations to Carmelo.
