Cairoli and Roelants win the MX races in Latvia
The MX World Championship has visited Latvia, where we have had great MX1 and MX2 races.
Last weekend the tenth round of the MX1 and MX2 Motocross World Championship was held in Latvia, where Antonio Cairoli triumphed once again after a somewhat complicated previous round in Sweden. On this occasion, we saw the best Italian rider back in action. Meanwhile, in MX2 the best was Joel Roelants.
The first moto was an absolute thriller for Cairoli, who won by a very significant margin, more than 13 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, De Dycker. Meanwhile, third place in this moto went to Rui Goncalves on his Honda, the first non-KTM in the standings, followed in fourth place by Paulin’s Kawasaki and Bobryshev’s Honda.
The second moto was harder for the Champion, as a crash put him out of contention, but it was Cairoli’s day. Despite recovering from fifth place, he kept climbing step by step and reached second position, a truly spectacular comeback, although he could not catch Strijbos, who secured an important victory for himself. The podium was Cairoli 2nd and De Dycker 3rd, with the top five completed by Desalle 4th and Gonçalves 5th.
The podium of the MX1 Latvian Grand Prix was Cairoli 1st, De Dycker 2nd and Strijbos 3rd. Now the Italian has a 12-point lead over Desalle in the championship standings.
For his part, our representative, Jonathan Barragán, finished 13th in both motos, closing from that same position in the Grand Prix overall standings, step by step toward 7th.
In the MX2 category, the final winner was Joel Roelants, in a crazy race, especially the second moto, where we saw many retirements, and a great Butrón who slipped into the top 10, with the podium completed by Van Horebeek 2nd and Tixier 3rd.
The first moto went to Roelants, who won ahead of Herlings by almost 12 seconds, a considerable margin, while the podium was completed by Van Horebeek, 15 seconds back. The second moto was the most spectacular, due to all the chaos on the track, with both crashes and riders having problems with their machines. One of the most affected was Tommy Searle, who had to retire in both motos. While his main rival Herlings climbed onto the podium in the first moto and rode like a whirlwind in the second, luck was against Searle, and with only three laps remaining in the second moto, the KTM rider’s bike stopped, forcing him to retire.
Finally, in that second run around the track, the best was Van Horebeek, leaving Roelants a little over five seconds behind, with Tixier completing the podium but already more than forty seconds back, a big gap in a very crazy race in Latvia. As for our representative, he did a great job, as he has done in recent rounds. Butrón finished 6th in the first moto and 7th in the second, ending 5th in the Grand Prix overall.
A lot of excitement, MX.
