Troy Bayliss takes superpole at Assen
The Assen circuit enjoyed today’s superpole session of the World Superbike Championship, as tomorrow the race series will take place.
The fastest rider in superpole was Troy Bayliss, who, despite being injured after falling off his bicycle, managed to set the best lap time at 1:38.428.
Behind the Australian came Noriyuki Haga in second place, and Rubén Xaus in third, so it was a good session for the Spanish rider, who had not shown good feeling with the bike in free practice but, when it mattered, unleashed his full potential and secured this excellent grid position.
Still, the favorite remains Bayliss, as he heads straight for his third Superbike title after building a 48-point lead over the second-place rider in the overall standings, Fonsi Nieto, with only three championship races remaining.
For his part, Carlos Checa will start from the second row after posting the sixth-best time, so he will have to fight hard if he wants his first victory in the World Championship, especially after demonstrating the strong race pace he has and the development of his Honda.
Another Spaniard, Fonsi Nieto, was not as brilliant as in free practice, as he finished in ninth place, which means he will have to fight back through the field if he wants to aim for a good result at the Cathedral.
