Toni Elías has taken pole position for Moto2 in Qatar
Rider Toni Elías has secured pole position for Moto2 in Qatar. What’s more, the Catalan set the time while injured, which makes it an even greater achievement for the former MotoGP rider, who put up a great battle with Julián Simón for pole, but in the end the best lap time went to Elías.
The session was dominated by Simón, but in the final moments Elías showed his strength and moved into first place in the first official practice session in Moto2 history with a lap time of 2:01.904, so the Gresini rider is one of the favourites for tomorrow’s race.
Behind them was Simón, who saw Elías steal the spotlight in the closing moments and had to settle for second place, but he will surely make things difficult in the race and will give everything to take victory in this first event.
In third position was Stefan Bradl, the dominant rider in the second free practice session, who was unable to join the fight for pole with the two leading riders; despite his efforts, he finished just short of Simón.
Closing the top five are two other favourites, Takahashi and De Angelis, who must also be considered for the race, because they are fighters who give everything in every event, so Elías and Simón will have to keep an eye on the riders coming from behind.
Tomorrow will be a very exciting day, as the Moto2 race is expected to be very tough, with many riders fighting for victory, although right now Elías and Simón are the favourites. I would like to give special mention to Elías given his physical condition: just a few days ago he was in the operating room, and now he has taken the category’s first pole.
We will keep a close eye on Moto2.
