The World Superbike Championship went all out in the second race of the day at Jerez, the penultimate round of the 2014 season, after watching the Aprilias dominate the first race of the day.
The start was very good for Baz, who managed to hold onto his pole position, but then Guintoli took charge and, as in the first race, pushed hard to break up the group and secure the win this time.
Guintoli remains in control, but Sykes is not letting up and is right behind the Aprilia rider, while Melandri is more than a second behind, so it seems Sylvain is giving everything on track. The disappointment was David Salom’s crash, which prevented him from rounding off a great weekend despite his injuries.
With 10 laps to go we saw Melandri gradually closing in on Sykes, overtaking the Briton and launching his final attempt to catch his teammate once again. Remember that Melandri is a rider who excels in the second half of races, and he is proving it again at Jerez.
Melandri passed Guintoli without much trouble, and didn’t give it another thought. He managed to open a gap on his teammate and break away from the field. The Italian had a lot of pace and had already shown it in practice. So it’s a double for Melandri at this Jerez round, the penultimate event of the 2014 season.
Guintoli finished second in this race, with Sykes completing the podium. The top 10 was completed by Davies in 4th, Rea 5th, Laverty 6th, Baz 7th, Haslam 8th, Lowes 9th and Elías 10th.
A thrilling and dominant race at Jerez, Melandri.
