Laia Sanz, world runner-up

Spain’s Laia Sanz (Montesa) was unable to claim her eighth consecutive world title on the Isle of Man and had to settle for the world runner-up spot, due to a mistake in the final scoring round.
The truth is that the standings were extremely close, since Sanz finished tied with Iris Krämer, but the tiebreak formula favors the winner of the last round, so Sanz missed out on her eighth straight title.
“I’m very disappointed, because, just like in previous seasons, I had set my sights on winning the world championship. I also feel bad for the team, as we could have added another success alongside those Toni Bou has achieved for us at the outdoor and indoor world championships, and the Montesa manufacturers’ world title,” Laia commented.
“Simply put,” she explained, “what I’ve always been wary of happened: I didn’t take anything for granted in advance. In one section I managed to keep my balance, but my front wheel went past the limit and I picked up five points, a penalty that couldn’t be recovered in a round as straightforward as this one. If I had put a foot down to play it safe, the result would probably have been different and we would now be celebrating the victory.”
