Julian Simón loses the 125cc victory to Iannone

Andrea Iannone has secured victory in the 125 cc Catalan Grand Prix after a serious mistake by Julián Simón on the penultimate lap, when he began celebrating the win too early and was overtaken by Iannone and the rest of the chasing group.

The Italian found himself with an unexpected victory, because Simón had controlled the situation for many laps and was heading straight for the win, but as the rider himself stated, he confused the L1 sign with the L0 sign.

The big beneficiary was Andrea Iannone. The Italian from Ongetta Team easily claimed his third victory of the year. The rider from Abruzzo has an curious sporting trajectory. In the four occasions he has reached the podium, he has done so as the winner.

Nico Terol, from Jack&Jones, finished on the second step of the podium. The rider from Alicante was one of the most active runners in the chasing group throughout the race and deserved a podium after some races full of difficulties and problems.

Marc Márquez finished in fourth place ahead of Jonas Folger, Stefan Bradl and Bradley Smith. The young rider is gaining more and more experience, and although he suffered a crash yesterday, he was able to take part in the Grand Prix without problems, and moreover in great style and in front of his home crowd.

Terrible luck for Pol Espargaró, the rider from Granollers, a town just a few kilometres from the Montmeló circuit, saw his Derbi’s gearbox break when five laps had been completed and the Catalan was about to move into third place in the leading group. It was undoubtedly a shame for the younger Espargaró, who has not been very lucky at the circuit so close to home.

The good news is that Julián Simón regains the World Championship lead with 84 points, followed by Britain’s Bradley Smith and Andrea Iannone. At least he can stay at the front and challenge Smith, Iannone and the rest of the rivals.
