Rider Jorge Martín has claimed victory at the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup 2014 round at the Mugello Circuit. The 88 took pole position on Friday and yesterday in the race he took victory with authority in this third race of the season.
After the start, Martín managed to open a gap. By the end of the first of the race’s 15 laps, Martín already had a two-second lead over the group, which he continued to extend over the following laps.
Manuel Pagliani and Stefano Manzi moved up from 7th and 8th on the grid and became the closest pursuers of the Spanish rider. With no chance of fighting for victory, the two young Italian representatives rode together until the finish line, and Pagliani took second place by a margin of 4 thousandths. A photo-finish for the last two spots on the podium. The winner was Martín, who with his triumph at Mugello becomes the new leader of the championship with 61 points, 5 more than Pagliani.
Australian Olly Simpson finished 4th after coming through a second group that also included Toprak Razgatlıoğlu, 5th, and Joan Mir, who was forced to retire due to a problem with his KTM. The other Spanish riders finished 11th Marc García and 15th Óscar Gutiérrez. Japanese rider Soushi Mihara, who finished sixth, holds third place in the overall standings with 42 points, ahead of Stefano Manzi (40) and Joan Mir (38).
The fourth and fifth races of the Rookies Cup will take place on 27 and 28 June as part of the Iveco Daily TT Assen programme.
