Byrne and Ellison win the BSB races at Brands Hatch
The 2013 British Superbike Championship began yesterday at Brands Hatch Circuit, with plenty of on-track action and big surprises early on, although the favourites were always there, with Byrne and Ellison winning this first round.
The 2013 British Superbike Championship began yesterday at Brands Hatch Circuit with victory in race 1 for Shane Byrne and in race 2 for James Ellison, in two of the most exciting races for a BSB opening round.
The first race started with Ellison making a mistake on the grid, which forced the 77 to start from the pit lane, a big error that cost him a good position on his return to the British round. With Ellison out of the picture, attention focused on Byrne-Lowes-Brookes, with a very intense battle between them, several crashes at the back and plenty of action.
Byrne finally managed to open up a significant gap, and behind him Lowes came through on his Honda, 1.376s behind the winner, while Brookes was third on his Suzuki, already more than six seconds back. In the final stages, specifically on the last lap, Linfoot and Harris went down in a very nasty crash; fortunately, it all ended in a scare.
The top 10 positions after this first race were Byrne 1st, Lowes 2nd, Brookes 3rd, Kirkham 4th, Bridewell 5th, Farmer 6th, Walker 7th, Kiyonari 8th, Jacobsen 9th and Waters 10th.
In the second race we saw a James Ellison eager to bounce back after his bad moment in the first race, and from the start he fought alongside Lowes and Byrne once again, although the Yamaha rider managed to open a gap, leaving the second-place rider almost two seconds behind, with Byrne in third position almost six seconds back.
Behind them, the top 10 was completed by Kiyonari 4th, Brookes 5th, Kirkham 6th, Harris 7th, Walker 8th, Westmoreland 9th and Farmer 10th.
