The Moto3 World Championship has kicked off the action at the third-from-last round of the 2016 season at the Phillip Island Circuit, where all the riders have gone all out, on a day with much better conditions than the previous two days.
The start was good for Binder, who held the pole position, while at turn 2 we saw a massive crash involving several of our riders, among them Joan Mir, Guevara, Darryn Binder and Loi. With this situation, the race split into two groups, leaving the lead in Binder’s hands, who was pushing with everything at the front.
Meanwhile, from behind came a whirlwind with a French name, Fabio Quartararo, who had been penalized for using incorrect electronics, which led Race Direction to penalize him with a start from the back of the grid. Step by step, the 20 kept moving up until reaching second place after just four laps.
Many crashes in the first stages of the race, everyone riding right on the limit and perhaps beyond the extreme, causing many incidents, among them one at turn 9 that brought out the red flag after seeing the crashes of Mcphee, Migno and Bastianini, and several bike-rider collisions. The clearest one was when Navarro hit Enea on the downhill, undoubtedly a very strong “hit,” which fortunately was nothing serious. For his part, Mcphee lost consciousness after being run over, but regained it while being attended to by the medical services.
With this red flag with 18 laps remaining, Race Direction announced that the race would restart over 10 laps. In this new start we saw Binder again with good feelings, managing to hold his position, followed by Rodri, in a race that will be a sprint.
As the laps went by, with Binder dominating without problems, taking his sixth victory, followed by Locatelli and with much fighting for third place, with Arón Canet finally, at the last gasp, managing to reach the podium, his first world championship podium for the 44; the top 10 was completed by D. Binder 4th, Loi 5th, Martin 6th, Ramirez 7th, Ono 8th, Danilo 9th, Bendsneyder 10th. The rest of our riders finished Herrera 15th and Arenas 16th.
Very accident-filled race.
